How Sports Badges and Levels Work for Children

Many sports academies use a structured levels or badge system to track and reward your child's progress. Here's how they work and why they matter.

What are progression levels?

Most well-run academies assess children at regular intervals (typically every 2–3 months) and place them in an appropriate skill group. As children improve, they progress to the next level. Taymo supports academies in tracking this digitally, so parents can see their child's progress in the parent app.

Badges and grading events

Sports like martial arts (karate belts, BJJ stripes), gymnastics, and swimming have formal grading systems with certificates and badges. Football academies may use internal star ratings or skill assessments. Grading events are usually held termly and come with a small assessment fee.

Why milestones motivate children

Visible progression milestones give children a sense of achievement and a reason to keep attending. Studies consistently show that children who have clear goals in sport persist through early frustration more effectively. A badge earned after genuine effort is powerful motivation.

What to do if your child feels stuck

If your child has been at the same level for a long time, speak with the coach directly. Ask for specific feedback: what skills need to improve for the next level, and how can you support practice at home? A good coach welcomes this conversation.
